Iphone Consideration from a Linux User

After I reading abou the U$200 price drop on Iphone and all those applications being developed I made a decision, I NEED ONE OF THOSE. I know, as a linux lover I should be talking about all that Neo1973 and OpenMoko stuff but I just can't, apple really caught me on this one.

Since some time ago I'm wishing some gadgets for my life, the first one was an mp3 player, I don't need one with hundreds Gigs, I just wanted a nice player, that had rechargeble battery, and a good interface (an Ipod nano for example), But I've allways wanted an mp3 player that really could play videos, not a ipod video, one with a really big screen, and I could not find anything that fit that.

I was wishing too an nice gadget that would connects to wi-fi networks and would let me surf the net with a fast browser and nice interface too. I Thought about getting an N800 (It's linux based, gtk based, niiice) but it was too expensive and too big, was not the kind of thing I would have with myself wherever I go.

The Third on Was a new cellphone, mainly if there was one that could do what the 1st and 2nd wished gadgets do. I considered getting one of those THC handhelds with phone, but, too expensive and windows based (Yuck!).

Then apple came with the IPhone. In the beggining was just a cool phone, because with the carrier lock (I live in brazil), no external apps , having to pay for everything including a simple ringtone and that price, It just didn't caught my attention.

Some time latter things begun to change. People started writing Apps for it (Even apache can be installed now, nice!), It got unlocked (its not easy yet but I think it can be done) and I just fell in love for it. Started watching videos about it, and looking for what could be done and what couldn't and I noticed that that was what I was looking. But there was 3 problems, first the price, that U$ 599 was just too much for me. How to get one if it's only selled on the states, And that I think there isn't any app to handle it in linux.

The First problem just have been solved, after that open letter from Steve Jobs I started to think I could afford buying one. The second maybe get solved now that a friend of mine is traveling to the US maybe in about a month. And the third I think I could make the sacrifice to install windows on one a spare drive just to handle it.

So now I've made my decision and I will get one IPhone, doesn't matter what people say about 3g and how hard is to unlock. Now I just have to save some (a lot) money. If anyone whats to help, hahahah, just leave a comment that i swear I'll find a way to contact you.

Maybe some days from now I post again about how is my mission of buying an Iphone going.

Thanks again.
Bye!
